“Etiwanda is a good team and a dangerous team and are in a funk right now, but we were opportunistic and took more advantage of their boo-boos than they did on ours,” Damien coach Andy Nieto said.

Nieto was referring to the seven total errors in the game.

Etiwanda dropped to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in league.

Damien was led by second baseman Sebastian Arguelles who had two hits – a triple and a two-run, ground-rule double in the first inning.

Senior right-hander Alec Beck pitched the last four innings in relief to pick up the win.

With the scored tied 4-4 in the fifth inning, the Spartans took the lead for good 6-4 with two runs coming across on a wild pitch and a throwing error.

Beck gave Damien a couple more runs with a two-run triple to right field for an 8-4 lead.

“(Friday) was a perfect example of picking each other up,” Beck said, “and let’s be honest, it wasn’t the cleanest game, and everyone has each other’s backs out here.”

Beck pitched the last four innings.

“You gotta be ready to be put in in situations like that,” Beck added. “I’m kind of used to it, and coming in with high intensity, it felt normal to me.

Etiwanda was led by sophomore shortstop Austen Roellig (2 for 4, HR, RBI) and junior right fielder Abraham Zapata (2 for 4, double, triple, 3 RBIs).

“(Friday) we’re searching to find a win and today we beat ourselves a little bit,” Etiwanda coach Don Furnald said. “When you’re trying to find a win, it’s a grind sometimes and when you face a good team they’ll take advantage of it.”

Etiwanda took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior catcher Jack Holman scored on a fielder’s choice, and Damien came back with two runs.

Roellig tied it 2-2 with his solo home run in the second, and Etiwanda took a 4-2 lead in the third by taking advantage of two errors and a wild pitch by Damien. That was the Eagles’ last lead of the game.

With Damien leading 8-4, Etiwanda scored three runs, the rally highlighted by a two-run double by Zapata.

Etiwanda freshman Jorge Solares pitched four innings, allowed three hits and four runs and struck out three. Junior reliever Luke Mariscal took the loss as he pitched the final two innings and allowed five runs.
